Therapy-Unit
| In our department we mostly deal with children affected by Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Poliomyelitis. We have at present more then fifty children affected by CP coming regularly to our school and each of them receives 4 or 5 physiotherapy sessions a week. We have five Physiotherapists and one Occupational Therapist in our unit, giving professional intervention to these children. The unit is well equipped with various instruments, such as a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS), a muscle stimulator, a multi- activity work station, a hand exercise table, a static cycle and other exercise/therapy devices and aids. We try to work with the children in a playful way. Often we use games and balls in the therapy session. Also we have a therapeutically useful playground in KIRAN-Village, where we work with sensory stimulation exercises. A big trampoline is also used for playing activities, serving as a tool for vestibular and kinesthetic exercises.

Physiotherapists work in close cooperation with Teachers, Special Educators, a Speech/ Language Pathology Expert, and the Medical Director, so that a global rehabilitative plan is devised for each child and regularly revised, every three months. Parents are also involved to actively participate in the education and rehabilitation of their children with proper activities at home.
The therapy unit does not only provide conventional physiotherapy, but also Hippo-therapy and Hydrotherapy in our own pool. Two of our physiotherapists are trained in the use of a horse, especially for the treatment of Cerebral Palsy children, who enjoy very much riding the horse. The pool has a solar heating system, which allows us to use it most of the time in a year.
Prosthetic & Orthopedic Workshop The Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) Workshop provides all the aids and appliances, which enable children to walk. In our well equipped Orthotic workshop the aids and appliances are manufactured with polypropylene. The light-weighted and good quality callipers manufactured in the P&O workshop of KIRAN Centre have eliminated all the faults and problems of the conventional metal callipers which give enough reasons for the children from remote villages to discard the appliances. The new appliances in contrast to the metal ones can be worn inside the clothes, and the child is not much exposing his disability. Our user-accepted aids & appliances have encouraged and helped children & youngsters with different abilities towards a more confident living with better social acceptance in the community. KIRAN Centre has a much specialised P&O workshop. Out of 20 such workshops in India, 8 belong to multi-national commercial agencies, 5 are to Indian Army and only 7 to NGOs. The nearest such workshop is located at Delhi (750 KM from Varanasi) and belongs to a multinational company. KIRAN is the only centre in Uttar Pradesh to look after many thousands disabled children/persons, to fulfil their different needs for functionality of the P&O appliances on such a qualitative level. The workshop of KIRAN centre manufactures all the appliances with standardised components and raw material. Its highly committed qualified/trained professionals and technicians are meeting the national level of fitment quality. Most of the calliper delivered from this workshop to adults last for 3-4 years without demanding any major repair; however, the growing children need to have their callipers replaced according to their growth. KIRAN tries to maintain its commitment that “no KIRAN-child shall be deprived of rehabilitation facilities just because the family cannot afford it”. Yet, we encourage parents to contribute financially both for surgery and appliances, depending upon their economic status.
Health Services In our Dispensary, a Health Carer and the Medical Director are daily giving children, trainees and staff assistance for first aid and common diseases, providing medicines, also for long treatments, when the economical conditions of the needy are very poor. Regular physical check-ups are organized for the school children and health education classes held to the teachers and students on proper nutrition and disease prevention.
Patients who are admitted in our Out- Reach Hostel ( where 12 beds are available), after orthopedic surgery, or for intensive physiotherapy and gait training, are cared and provided with medicines and dressing, according to their needs.
