INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
To mark International Women’s Day, KIRAN hosted an event on the situation of women’s security at Shastri Ghat in Varuna Bridge, Varanasi city. KIRAN’s Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Unit, which has been working with the HAL project (Health, Awareness, and Livelihood, supported by Big Lottery Fund, UK), organized the programme. Ms. Suman Yadav, Vice President, UP State Commission for Women, as a chief guest, chaired the event while other speakers included Dr. Professor Kumud Ranjan, Dr. Madhu Kushawaha, Executive Committee member of KIRAN Society and Dr. Smriti Singh (Programme Director at Mahila Samakhya, UP).
Attendees of the event around 1500 were mostly rural women, some with their children, from three blocks from Varanasi and Mirzapur Districts. After some opening ceremonies, Sangeeta J.K., Director, KIRAN-Society commenced the event with a short introductory welcome speech. All attendees listened attentively while speakers discussed the necessity for all women to empower themselves, to realize their rights and duties and lift themselves up. With Ration Cards changing to be held in the female’s name as a head of family, it was said that it is particularly important for women to become knowledgeable and aware of these rights so that they may seek the opportunities available to them.
A list of demands with signatures to the government representative was also presented, points on the list focused on improving safety and security for women in society, equal inclusion and encouragement of women in government and its schemes/projects, improving government attention and care towards disabled populations and more.
Towards the end, a group of KIRAN students performed a wheel chair dance and Prerna Kala Munch performed an effective play based on women rights “Ganga Ho Ya Gangi”, which was organized with the collaboration of the National Human Rights Committee, Drishti Society & Kashi Kaumi Ikata Munch, Varanasi.
After all of the festivities women were given snacks of Parle-G biscuits, samosas and sweets. KIRAN is happy to have been able to host such a successful event, which gained coverage across the majority of print and TV news in Varanasi!
Our school children had wonderful trip to Allahabad about 125 km far from Varanasi city by train on Sunday, March 1, 2015. We the children & staff would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the GEBERIT Sanitation group for their generous support for this program.
Anti Plastic Campaign
On 27th of January 2015, it was an occasion to celebrate our Foundation day and Birthday of our Executive Director – Sangeeta Bahin Ji.
We had decided to celebrate it as a day for anti plastic campaign. Our many children, youngsters and diploma students were involved in it. They met people on road side, with shop keepers and many more to convince them to minimize use of plastic in our daily life.

On Monday, 17 November 2014, KIRAN Society, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, held its first awareness program at Lok Bandhu Government Inter College, in Tikri, Varanasi. The KIRAN Society’s informational movie was shown to the students and teachers. After that the principal (Officiating) of the college Mrs. Jaya, Sandeep Pandey, Music teacher, KIRAN and the two students of the college inaugurated the ceremony by lighting a lamp, symbolizing rays of hope. Ms. Promila Charan, PA to Director from KIRAN talked about the mission and services of KIRAN and Mr. Ranjeet Kumar Singh, Projects head, gave an information session about adolescent rights, disability and prevention. To conclude the program, the children of KIRAN Society gave an effective dance on wheel chairs and song performance. The craft and bakery items made by differently abled persons were also sold through stall. The gathering was around 400 students & teachers in this program.
